DENTAL IMPLANTS

Benefits of Dental Implants

Dental implants can provide numerous advantages, including the ability to prevent the patient from suffering from problems associated with missing teeth. Numerous problems can result when a tooth is lost and it is not replaced, including digestion difficulties, problems in chewing food properly, sores in the mouth and much more. In comparison to other dental restoration options, such as dentures, bridges and crowns, dental implants provide a solution that is both strong and durable. Dental implants are now the treatment of choice for replacing a missing tooth or teeth. Implants look, feel and function like natural teeth, while helping to preserve the natural contours of a patient’s face.
Osteointegrated implants are perhaps the most popular option used today. They are primarily comprised of titanium. This precious metal helps to stimulate the growth of bone cells on the surface of the implant. The result is the formation of a very strong bond between the implant and the jawbone.

Implant Dentistry Procedures

The first step in receiving a dental implant is for your dentist to prepare a portion of the ridge for the insertion of the implant. There are two main parts to the dental implant. They are the screw, which is inserted into the jawbone, and the crown. A special drill bit is used for the dentist to make small holes in the pre-determined locations within either the lower or upper jaw. The titanium screw can then be embedded into these holes. A protective cap will then be used to cover the screw. At this point, the screw is left in place so that cells can begin to grow through the process of osteointegration. After a period of a few months, an appropriate permanent prosthesis will be constructed for covering the dental implant, which may be a bridge, crown or a partial or complete denture, based on the patient’s needs. Using laser dentistry and sedation if desired, this entire process is painless and suture-free.
